Indoor Air Quality
Heat and Energy Recovery Ventilators & Service in Elmhurst, IL
Fresh air flow is an important part of keeping your home’s indoor air quality high. Most of the time, it’s not a big deal to simply open your windows and let air flow into the home. In summer and winter, however, doing so will compromise your climate control.
The solution that most people use is simply to go without fresh air during days when they need to artificially keep the home at a reasonable temperature. However, that simply makes the air in your home go stale, and can cause a variety of other problems.
If you want to keep fresh air flowing through your home without compromising your climate control, call Fiebrandt Bros Heating & Cooling, Inc.. We offer a full range of heat and energy recovery ventilator services throughout Elmhurst, IL and the surrounding area. Call today to schedule an appointment with one of our experts.
How HRV’s and ERV’s Work
Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRVs) and Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) are devices designed to constantly exchange air between the home and the outside environment, all without compromising the temperature inside the home. They do this using large heat exchangers, which are installed on the outer wall of the home and connected to the ducts.
Outside air can flow into the home, and vice versa, using the heat exchangers. As the two air flows pass each other in the heat exchanger, they equalize each other’s temperatures. So, air flowing into the home is roughly the same temperature as the air the climate control is circulating. The main difference between the two system types is that ERV’s also include a part that allows them to control humidity.
In the summer, an ERV will attempt to dehumidify the air a bit in order to keep you cool. In the winter, the ERV will reverse its humidity function to prevent the air inside the home from drying out. Other than this function, ERV’s and HRV’s are pretty similar.
The Benefits of Recovery Ventilators
Eliminating air flow in a home is a great way to tank your indoor air quality. Airborne contaminants will become trapped in the home, making it more likely for you to get sick and suffer other ill effects. Humidity levels can become unbalanced, becoming either too dry or too moist depending on what season it is. All of these can have an uncomfortable and unhealthy effect on you. This is why it’s so important to install an HRV or ERV system in your home, so that you can keep your indoor air quality as high as possible.
